- <p> DIED. AHARON REMEZ, 74, founder of the Israeli air force; in
- Jerusalem. As a teenager, Remez joined the Haganah, Israel's
- pre-state defense force. A Spitfire pilot in Britain's Royal
- Air Force during World War II, Remez helped create Haganah's
- postwar flying service and led the Israeli air force after independence
- in 1948. Remez served as ambassador to Britain in the '60s and
- helped draft U.N. Security Council Resolution 242, which called
- upon Israel to withdraw from territories conquered in the '67
- war--a key objective of Middle East diplomacy ever since.
